The best coastal wardrobes have always been shaped by their surroundings. Cotton that feels cool against sun-warmed skin. A sweatshirt substantial enough for the first breeze after sunset. A polo that can move from the fairway to the terrace without looking as though it belongs exclusively to either.
At Mar & Alma, we take a similarly considered approach to our collections. Our aesthetic is anchored in Portugal: its Atlantic landscapes, ceramics, maritime traditions, and its enduring relationship with craftsmanship. Yet our sourcing is deliberately global.
Rather than asking one place to do everything, we look to the makers and materials best suited to each garment. The result is luxury coastal wear with a distinctly modern point of view: Portuguese soul, international craftsmanship, and fabrics chosen for how they feel, perform, and endure.
From American Supima® cotton to Portuguese French Terry and South Korean performance textiles, every material has a reason for being here. Here is why.
American cotton, perfected
The foundation of any great T-shirt is the cotton. For our Supima® styles, we chose American Supima® cotton, an Extra-Long Staple (ELS) fibre grown exclusively in the United States and recognised for its exceptionally long, strong fibres.
Why does that matter? Longer fibres can be spun into a finer, smoother yarn, creating the remarkably soft hand-feel associated with premium cotton while helping the fabric resist pilling and retain its colour and shape over time.
Our Founders Tee and Navegador Tee are made from 100% certified ELS American Supima® cotton, cut in a modern tailored silhouette with enough structure to drape cleanly without feeling formal. In Cream and Navy, they are deliberately uncomplicated: a small M&A monogram at the chest, a subtle Moliceiro motif and our mantra Salt. Soul. Saudade. providing the detail.
We have intentionally created a Supima® cotton T-shirt designed to become a favourite rather than a seasonal novelty; worn with denim in the city, tailored linen shorts on the coast, and repeatedly washed without losing the qualities that made it special in the first place.
Even the less visible elements are deliberate. Our natural cotton knits use soft, high-definition woven labels chosen to retain a classic structure without compromising the feel of the garment.
The Portuguese layer
For the hoodie, there was only one obvious place to look. Portugal has long been regarded as one of Europe's great centres of premium textile and knitwear manufacturing, with generations of technical knowledge behind its reputation for producing garments for some of the world's most respected fashion houses.
Our Portuguese French Terry hoodie is made from 100% organic cotton at 300 GSM, a hefty weight chosen specifically for life beside the Atlantic and beyond. It has enough substance to hold a clean, elevated silhouette, while remaining breathable enough for cooler evenings and early mornings by the water.
Its construction is equally deliberate. A three-panel self-fabric-lined hood gives the shape structure, while flatlock interior seams and reinforced shoulder-to-neck taping add durability without unnecessary bulk. The fabric is garment-dyed and enzyme-washed, creating a pre-shrunk finish with an exceptionally soft, almost broken-in hand from the first wear.
Coming in Atlântico Blue, Navy, Cream and Grey colourways, it is an easy layer over a Supima® T-shirt and tailored trousers, or with shorts when the afternoon stretches towards sunset.
Sustainability is another reason we manufacture this particular piece in Portugal. Our ethical apparel manufacturing takes place in an audited European facility operating under EU labour standards, with GOTS and SANE certifications and SMETA/Sedex compliance. The facility is powered by integrated solar panels, running entirely on solar power for nine months of the year, alongside water filtration for garment-dyeing processes.
For us, Portuguese craftsmanship is not simply a label on a swing tag. It is part of the garment's story.
Performance, refined
The third part of the equation comes from further east. South Korea has established itself as a leader in advanced technical textiles, particularly in the world of premium active and golf apparel. For our performance polos, that expertise allows us to approach technical clothing without sacrificing the aesthetic restraint that defines Mar & Alma.
Our polos use a 160 GSM performance jersey made from 88% polyester and 12% spandex, engineered for four-way stretch, moisture-wicking and anti-pilling performance. Laser-precision construction, reinforced two-piece plackets, and grosgrain-lined side vents are designed to support movement and longevity.
The Azulejo, Sardine, and Waves collections translate distinctly Portuguese references into a contemporary sporting wardrobe: ceramic tile bands, ocean-inspired gradients, sardine motifs, and precision embroidery. Custom faux-shell buttons add another tactile detail, while tagless heat-transfer labels eliminate the irritation that conventional labels can cause during movement.
This is luxury golf wear designed to exist beyond the course; tucked into tailored chinos for dinner, worn untucked with classic golf shorts, or taken straight from an afternoon round to a late lunch.
The subtle details that stay hidden
Some of our favourite details are the ones you have to know to look for.
The underside of our structured snapback caps carries custom-printed Portuguese azulejo artwork, hidden beneath the brim. Flip the cap over and a piece of Portugal reveals itself: a subtle reference to the country's centuries-old ceramic tradition rather than a logo designed to be seen from across the room.
The same philosophy runs throughout the collection. High-density embroidery is designed to lie flat against the fabric. Critical stress points receive targeted bar-tack stitching. Cuffs and hems use high-recovery cotton-elastane ribbing to help retain their shape. Prints use soft-hand inks that become part of the garment rather than sitting heavily on top of it.
These are small decisions, but collectively they change how a garment feels.
Small-scale production
Mar & Alma operates on a controlled micro-batch production model, making garments in small quantities rather than contributing to the cycle of excess inventory and textile waste.
Across our supply chain, certified cottons and natural fabrics are sourced through suppliers working with recognised standards including GOTS, OEKO-TEX® Standard 100, USDA Organic and Fair Trade, while our technical textiles are produced through ISO 9001/14001 and bluesign® approved processes.
Ultimately, coastal clothing should feel much like the coast itself: considered, enduring and shaped by its surroundings. At Mar & Alma, that means bringing together the finest we can find and giving each material a distinctly local soul.
Global craftsmanship, perhaps. But always with a little salt, soul, and saudade.
